September 22, 1944 Homemaker Married 3
After graduation I went to the Uof M for 2 years. I started as a Fight Attendent for Northwest Airlines in the fall of 64. A year later when the Seattle Base opened , I transferred out there  to fly overseas. I met my husband a week after he returned from Viet Nam. We have been married for 43 years. He was in the Insurance bisiness so we moved around every few years. We moved from Seattle to Minneapolis, to Sioux Falls, Kansas City, Mission Viejo, Ca.  Thousand Oaks, Ca., Dallas,to Seattle, Wa, and finally to Salem, Oregon. We love living here and now that he is retired, we are going to stay.
Our Oldest son Dave lives in Napa, Ca with his wife and 7 year old son Ian. Our daughter Jen lives in Davis, Ca with her husband and 4 year old twins, Bridget and Benjamin. Their two families are only 50 minutes apart. so we see often. Our youngest son Mike lives in West Richland, Wa. where he is a winemaker for one of the big vineyards there.

I hope everyone has a fun time and I am looking forward to seeing the DVD and more pictures from the reunion.

October 12, 1944 Married 2

Dear Class Mates,

Returns to Richfield have fortunately been frequent for me.  Richfield gave me roots and wings.  My grandparents’ farm home and greenhouses that I grew up with are long gone, but family still lives nearby.  As Richfield’s AFS (American Field Service) exchange student to Finland, I was launched.  Later at Gustavus, I received another scholarship to study in Thailand and traveled home around the world when I was not yet 21!   I graduated from Gustavus with English and Speech majors and a teaching certificate.

A UCLA Chancellor’s Fellowship lured me to Los Angeles where I earned my MA, and then, PhD in Theater in 1971.  In 1973, I left a teaching position at LA Harbor College (where I started its first film course) when I was accepted into the two year Directors Guild/Producer Training program.  When I was selected, I aspired to be a First Assistant Director, the person who runs the movie shooting company.  Simply put, there were no women First ADs then. During the next 30 years I did, in fact, work my way up from 3rd Assistant Director, to 2nd Assistant Director, to First AD, and then to Production Manager and Line Producer.  Every time I moved up, it seemed I was the first woman doing that job that the crew had ever worked with.  Sexism remains the norm in Hollywood.  The only time I was First Assistant Director to a woman Director was on a two day commercial shot just last year!  Imagine how thrilled I was to see Kathryn Bigelow become the first female Director to win the Academy Award for 2009’s “Hurt Locker.”

Gratefully, good men mentored me.  I was Assistant Director to luminary Directors like Arthur Penn and Robert Aldrich, worked with stars like Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson (who remained convinced I was the “Cheryl” Mouseketeer), and shot movie locations all over this country and abroad, including Hawaii and Alaska. I even made the film “Ice Castles” in Minneapolis/St. Paul one winter.  But we ran out of snow and had to move to Colorado Springs to finish the shoot.  (Foreshadowing global warming?!)

My peers and the Directors Guild honored me with its highest award in 2000.  It was the first time the Frank Capra Award, given to an Assistant Director/Production Manager for distinctive career achievement and service to the Guild, was bestowed on a west coast woman!  I had served the Guild in many ways, being elected to its National Board for 15 years, being appointed to its Training Program Board for 25 years, being a co-founder of the Guild’s Women’s Committee, etc.  Gustavus also honored me with its Distinguished Alumni Citation, and Richfield High awarded me the Classic Lake Conference Award in Fine Arts in 1996.

More recently I served as Executive Director of the Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892 for 6 years.   Running a union, organizing non-union shooting companies, and negotiating labor contracts for those who design costumes for movies and television were  rewarding and instructive, too.

But, by far my most important productions have been my 2 children, now 20 and 25.   Does anyone remember that I was nursing my son at the RHS 25th reunion!?  I wonder if I might be the person in our class who started a family latest in life?!  The point is, I didn’t miss out on the blessing of children, even though it was a challenge to raise them alone.  I do trust grandchildren are a ways off but certainly hope to experience that joy, as so many of you describe.  At the moment, I’m especially looking forward to being married in MN this November.  Larry will be joining me at our various reunion galas.

I welcome the chance to see you in September and share our roots and wings,

Cheryl Downey

I am really looking forward to our 50th Reunion.  I have been very fortunate to head a great reunion committee.  We have some fun things planned and I hope many of you can join us.  I lost my husband Rich in 2009 after 45 years of marriage.  I have two sons Jon and Don.  Jon is married and has 3 children, Miriam 11, Tyler 9 and Rachel 3.  They are very special to me and I love to spend time with them.  Don is still single but is looking for that right lady.  I am enjoying my retirement (09).  I loved working with my students and learned a lot from them.  It is fun to see them around town and get a chance to catch up on their lives.  I am a member of the Red Hat Society, we call ourselves the Funky Follie Girls and enjoy getting together once a month.  It is great to get out in our red hats and purple clothes.  People always want to take pictures of us.  Of course if we were to dress like that on our own the reaction would be very different.  I hold an amatuer radio license general class.  My call is KA0EPZ.  I do not get on the air like I used to with Rich but do enjoy 2 meters.  Both Jon and Don are also ham radio operators.  Don just upgraded 1 1/2 years ago and aquired his dads call.  My spare time is busy with the Richfield Historical Society, Richfield Visions, and I serve on my churches funeral committee.  My hobbies includes needle work, rubber stamping, travel, spending time with my family and friends and of course working on our reunion committee. The now picture is back row me, son Jon, son Don.  Front row Tyler 10, Miriam almost 12, Jon's wife Sandy, and Rachel almost 4. I am excited about our reunion but do have a hard time thinking it has been 50 years since we walked out on that football field for the last time.

WOW!  Have read some of the posted profiles.  Fun to catch up and sad that we have lost so many of our classmates.
After graduation I worked as an keypunch operator for Munsingwear for a year then flying as a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines.  Loved to travel!!!  Married my husband of 46 years and we had two awesome children by 1968.  When the children went off to school so did I working for a certificate in Interior Design at the Uof M.  In 1977 my husband Keith and I purchased Kemper Drug in Elk River, Minnesota.  Keith, a pharmacist always wanted to own his own business.  I expanded and ran the gift shop.  So the city girl moved to the country.  It was an adjustment to say the least.  I began volunteering at school and met alot of my lifetime friends.  Small town life then was pretty wonderful. Along the way enjoyed golf, skiing, painting, genealogy and and many family fishing and snowmobiling vacations.  Really love Minnesota winters!  Retired when we sold our business to our daughter in 2001.  I love to play bridge, work as a wedding coordinator at our church and recently have taken up tap dancing. We have 4 outstanding grandchildren that we follow in their sporting and academic pursuits on a daily basis.  I have traveled the world with my husband and a group of 8 "Traveling Sisters". Unfornately that is what I will be doing on September 22, 2012.  I certainly regret that I can't attend the reunion but I send to all of you my heartfelt greetings.  I know you will have a DYNAMITE time renewing old friendships and making new memories with those who we now know share our lifetime experiences.

Retired Married 4

Graduated from Yale University and went to law school, starting at Wake Forest and finishing at the U of M.  Served as a law clerk to two federal judges, as a federal prosecutor in Iowa and North Carolina, and worked in private practice. Retired in 2009, after 32 years on the bench as a United States Magistrate Judge for the  federal court in the Middle District of North Carolina.

Met a nice South Dakota girl, but had to travel to North Carolina to find her. When Karen and I married here in Winston Salem on Easter Morning 25 years ago, we had the backing of a brass band, in the style and tradition of the Moravian Church.  I can still hear the sounds ringing in my ears (or is it just my tinnitus?).  Oh well, it was, and is still, glorious.  We blended together one son and three daughters, and now have five grandchildren.

While Karen is the real musician in the family,  I satisfied a childhood desire by learning (still learning) to play the trumpet as an adult and now play in an amateur community band and for Old Salem in a period costume band.  After retirement, Karen and I have had more time to pursue our love of opera, to travel, and to enjoy our children and grandkids.

August 21, 1944 Retired from Day Care Married 3
50 years! how fast time flies.  After graduation I worked as a dental assistant for my orthodontist.  In late 1963 I had brain surgery to remove a brain tumor that injured my optic nerves, That hasen't slowed me down any.  In 1964 I married Rich Borne RHS 1960.  We had 3 wonderful boys who now range in ages from 38 to 45.  They are all married with families of their own.  My 6 grandkids range in ages 5 to 18 years.  It is so nice to watch them grow, and be part of their lives.  After my 3 boys were in school, I went to work fo Donaldson's,at Southdale., then Southdale Bridal, and finally, RUSH'S Bridal as a bridal consultant.  I also have worked as a videographer for Rich and my company, Borne Recording Service.  I shot/edited weddings, plays, concerts etc.  After Rich died in 2010, I closed the video business.  Since 2000 to this spring I had "Grandma Sue's Day Care". ,I retired the day care  this spring.  On June 24th I married a wonderful man, Jerry Danner,  in a beautiful Chapel setting, with family and close friends attending. We are both excited to have found each other after each having lost our spouses.  (Computer dating does work!!!) We both enjoy biking, gardening, and keeping up the yard,  traveling (when possible)  rooting for the Mn. TWIN and just beig together.

It will be fun to see classmates again. I am looking forward to a wonderful weekend of reconnecting with many of you. Hope it's a good turnout.  There are lots of good memories to share, and friendships to renew.
